Becoming Elizabeth Season 1 Summary

Becoming Elizabeth Season 1 Summary
Becoming Elizabeth Season 1 Summary

Season 1 of Becoming Elizabeth opens with Henry VIII’s death, leading to England in chaos. Mary, Elizabeth, and Edward are the three children of Henry. Now, Edward begins his reign. Catherine Parr, Henry’s widow, weds Thomas Seymour. As Catherine and Thomas’ wards, Elizabeth and Lady Jane Grey relocate to her Chelsea home. Elizabeth, a fourteen-year-old, develops feelings for Thomas, a much older man, who indulges and takes advantage of her. Elizabeth is cautioned by Mary about Catherine Parr and is advised to move in with her. There is a fight between Thomas and Edward Seymour.

Elizabeth declines Mary’s request for support in defending her right to practice her religion. To placate Mary, the Catholic Bishop of Winchester, Stephen Gardiner, is let out of the Tower of London and appointed to the privy council. After Elizabeth discovers the event’s true purpose, she ruins the party by ruining the evening. Elizabeth is expelled from their home by Catherine after she learns of Thomas and Elizabeth’s friendship. As the religious unrest worsens, the Catholic church is looted, and the priest is attacked. Elizabeth’s absence from the court is apparent.

Both Mary and her friend Robert Dudley visit her. Thomas Seymour and Elizabeth are the subjects of rumors. After giving birth to a daughter, Catherine succumbs to childbed fever. Elizabeth is urged to get married by Thomas Seymour now that he is a widower. Thomas Seymour, a widower, strives for Elizabeth and asks for her hand in marriage. Without the monarch’s knowledge, Lord Protector Edward Seymour tries to arrange a covert arrangement with the French envoy; the king finally learns about it and is furious.

Thomas asks Elizabeth to marry him in exchange for Edward Seymour’s consent, but Edward declines. Thomas Seymour makes an unsuccessful attempt to kidnap the king in retribution. Thomas is taken into custody, and Elizabeth is accused and given a warrant for her arrest. John Dudley questions Elizabeth while she is under house arrest after Thomas Seymour is apprehended. Thomas is decapitated after council members pressure a conflicted Edward Seymour to submit a countersignature to the execution sentence.

John Dudley disobeys Seymour’s commands after growing tired of them by killing peasant traitors. He takes over as the new Lord Protector after returning to court. Both Elizabeth and Mary have influential Protestant marriage proposals made, and the court is getting ready for the arrival of Elizabeth’s intended husband, the Danish prince. The young king Edward displays symptoms of a disease. After two months, Edward’s condition gets worse. In preparation for Edward’s passing, the council and the two princesses attempt to depose John Dudley before Mary comes to court. It is known that Robert Dudley wed Amy Robsart.

After being detained in the Tower of London, Edward Seymour is executed. Dudley informs Edward that both his sisters have been unfaithful, and Edward bans them from the court. As he vomits blood, the king is reminded of another potential heir to the throne—his cousin Lady Jane Grey.
