The first season came out in June 2022 and the second season is set to release in 2023. There are 6 episodes in the premiere season all under the duration of 50 minutes each.

The show focuses on the lives of Native Americans and depicts the vibrancy of Navajo culture and heritage. It also attempts to represent Navajo ceremonies rather than fetishizing or exoticizing them accurately. Interestingly, the show’s writers are all Native Americans to preserve the authenticity of the representation and prevent any gross stereotypes.

The show follows the story of Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee, two Navajo police officers who are in charge of investigating crimes that seem unrelated. The story is set in the year 1971 in Navajo Nation near Monument Valley. While working on the cases, Lieutenant Leaphorn also begins digging into his past and discovering many wounds. His partner, Deputy Chee also has unfinished business from his time growing up on the reservation. The series follows their investigations, their pasts, and their battles. The first season is based on Tony Hillerman’s Listening Woman (1978) and partly on People of Darkness (1980).

The final episode of season 1 shows a violent face-off in the cave where James Tso and Nakai have taken a Mormon family as hostages. Chee, Leaphorn, and Manuelito enter the cave to arrest them and save the hostages, It is also revealed that Whitover has been involved with the armored car heist from the beginning.

The final face-off between Nakai, Leaphorn, Whatever, and Tso ends with Leaphorn heavily wounded and Nakai shot fatally. Whatever tries to blow up the cave and escape with his share of the loot but Chee and Manuelito prevent this from happening. Chee faces off his previous mentor, Whitover who tries to convince Chee to spare him by tempting him with a promotion and part of the looted money. But Chee doesn’t sway from his ideals but Guy ends up intercepting the scene and shooting at Whitover which finally kills the agent.

On the other hand, Tso and Leaphorn face off against each other where Joe tries to stop Tso from killing himself but fails to do so ending in Tso’s death. The show ends with closure for both Leaphorn and Chee. Leaphorn finds peace at last, after his son’s death in a mining accident years ago. He and his wife burn their son’s jacket to commemorate the emotional ceremony where their entire family gets together to grieve.

Chee moves on from his troubled past and leaves FBI. He gets closer to his roots after spending time at the reservation which makes him rethink his life. Leaphorn offers him a position in the Navajo police. The season ends on a slight cliffhanger since Nakai’s body is not found along with his share of the loot.
