The first episode of the series tells Alex’s tale, detailing her battle with sadness after losing her best friend in the fifth grade and the accompanying bullying she experienced at school. The format of the series is about everyone to be sat together as they each share a story. The narration that follows is broken up by a few startling enactments. These sections have somehow forced the series to lose its liveliness. We need to remember that the show is discussing and dealing with serious topics, and you should respect the people involved and their efforts.
However, these “tricks” to captivate viewers with stylistic re-enactments actually fail to engage the audience. Thus, in the episode showing Clare’s and Isabel’s story, we are introduced to images such as classmates dancing and flinging napkins and tampons into the air. Similar to this, in the Amiri-related episode, there is a re-enactment in which the church’s pastor speaks in a way that leads Amiri to believe he is the wicked one.
Oscar winner Brie Larson should be praised for coming up with such a fresh idea; the show has the correct spirit. A number of the episodes were also directed by Brie and other filmmakers. However, this motivating series loses all of its sparks due to its superficial and frivolous handling. Style is given precedence over substantive information. The shine of the greater issue is somehow diminished if the people are exceptionally well dressed and converse about important topics in a setting that is exquisitely decorated.
Growing Up: Stream It Or Skip It?
Eleven young adults enter and start chit-chatting on a set covered in cushions in a soft color. The Growing Up producer Brie Larson then explains what they are doing during the “hangout portion.” The segments are directed by Larson, and they involve everyone who is being profiled sitting in the studio and listening to the person who is being featured before adding their own comments.
