Hortensia Saga is a fantasy anime that follows the rules. The princess disappears, the king is assassinated, a knight sworn to guard him perishes, and the brother of that knight trains his son to put down a neighboring country’s uprising against the kingdom. Within the Hortensia kingdom, a modest youngster named Alfred Albert is regarded as the Lord of a certain plot of land. He engages in combat with Roy Bachelot, one of those organizing the uprising, and is, as one might expect, defeated. Alfred must become more powerful so that he can face Roy once and for all.

Of course, the plot isn’t immediately clear. It developed gradually as Alfred explored the area and started to put the puzzle pieces together. Along the road, he also made the acquaintance of a few fellow travelers, including Deflotte Danowa, a spear-wielder, and Marius, Alfred’s page.

They start looking into the causes of a plague that, well, petrifies individuals along with his uncle Maurice. They see the church’s involvement, which forces them into combat with Didier, the strongest knight in the realm. Then they find out that a witch was to blame for the plague and that Marius is the main suspect for some reason.

If the matching appearance, eye color, hair, voice, and virtually identical name didn’t give it away in the first episode, Marius is actually the missing Princess Marielle. Without exaggeration, it was likely the worst-kept secret in all of anime. Marielle is undoubtedly a witch, at least according to the deceitful, lying church! It turned out to be a complex trick by the Pope and the only thing that could have turned them to stone was Magnonian power. Everyone was a pawn in his game, which should come as no surprise.

Rugis, the Duke under whom Roy works, sent his troops into Hortensia in search of the artifact. However, despite suffering serious injuries during the struggle, Didier managed to escape unharmed and relocate the artifact. With about 12 minutes left in the series, we decide to have Vall transform into a final boss monster in the style of Final Fantasy (and switch genders in the process) in order to combat everyone, but we have no idea where. We were too preoccupied managing that entire conspiracy, then, to even try looking for the artifact.

Parentally, mortal wounds like that don’t matter when you change back into human form. It’s the second round of the ultimate battle and Vall is still alive! However, Duke Rugis transforms into a werewolf (again—something he did in Episode 1 as the person responsible for the king’s death) and kills Vall in a single blow.

He then murders Alfred before disappearing by jumping from a window. He had to fulfill his task and return to catering before the mahi-mahi ran out, almost as if the credits were about to start. Marianne lost her love interest and the main character was killed off, but after the credits had finished, a stirring epilogue takes place in which Marianne reclaims the throne and addresses the audience with Alfred supporting her.
