The HBO series, now in its second season, instantly distinguished itself as an engaging workplace drama; the first season focused on the lives of recent hires at Pierpiont & Company, an investment bank on London’s equivalent of Wall Street. The industry evolved into a gripping survival of the fittest as college graduates competed for long-term placements and positions in the company. It also provided an insightful look into the lives of young 20-somethings and how they all managed this high-pressure situation where fortunes could be made or lost in a matter of seconds.

Harper Stern (Myha’la Herrold) is having difficulties as Season 2 opens. She is apprehensive of her position with her manager Eric (Ken Leung) and with her fellow Pierpoint employees after having a severe panic attack during the first season’s finale (and being kept away from the Pierpoint headquarters due to a global epidemic). Pierpoint’s New York office is considering closing the London facility unless they can produce, which would only make issues worse. And in the most recent airing of the second episode, Harper succeeds.

Although everyone aspires to be a good parent, not everyone is equipped to do so. It turns out that hurt people continue to be damaged, whether it be physically, emotionally, or financially through poorly managed assets. All of our three major characters—some more obviously than others—are the results of neglect in some way. Yas’ relationship with her father has been prominent so far this season, and the magnitude of his adultery is still evident here, but we weren’t fully aware of how much in common she has with the people she’s so keen to try and convince herself of their position.

But let’s start with Yas because much of the drama takes place in Berlin, her European home away from home. Since Harper has previously dated both the client and a long-lost brother who might reside in the area, she uses her connections to gain access to Eric, who enjoys causing trouble. For no apparent reason, the three remain in Yas’ father’s apartment, which is vacant but is still maintained by a cleaning lady.

It feels fantastic to be back on the continent, Yas utters at one point, completely without irony. Although that’s a post-Covid remark, you may interpret it as her expressing happiness in a fantasy version of her family’s history, where framed pictures of the cherished nanny adorn the mantelpieces. Yas discovers and finally confirms throughout the programme that her father had a long-term relationship with that nanny. She never knew, or perhaps she did. This person has probably found their mother cheating more frequently than once. They are defined by their dysfunctional families and romantic relationships.

Although Harper’s parents’ worries are less clear, we discover in “Kitchen Season” that her mother had enough dragon power to send two children flying. In Berlin, Harper’s brother, a crystal meth addict who works in a kitchen, lives. She hasn’t seen him in a long time and had no idea he enjoyed drinking, let alone using Class A drugs. Their conversation reveals that he was once a talented tennis player who was pushed to an abusive degree. He had already relapsed by the time he finally saw his sister after who knows how many years. He is triggered by all the attributes she is proud of and all the qualities she excels at in finance.

Robert is the next in line. His background has always been described in terms of class; he did not originate from a wealthy family but managed to work his way there. His drive and intellect helped him escape his predicament and his father’s working-class camp lout. He carried a heavy burden of expectation.

This week, he tries to impress his father with his success, but instead, he ends up struggling to get out of a bottle and a bag once more, marking his second relapse in a row. But the issue is as follows. Robert meets with a prospective ally in his compromised state and, despite all his bravado, convinces her to support Pierpoint. He succeeds professionally while going through a personal low point. Industry Season 2 is available on HBO.
