Keene and Hillel Levin co-authored the nonfiction book In with the Devil: A Fallen Hero, a Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption, in which they discussed their experiences going undercover. According to Levin’s account in the book, Keene was warned by Beaumont that he would not be granted an early release if he did not provide the purported location of Reitler’s body. Keene did spend months with Hall and become close to him, much like in the show, to talk about both Roach and Reitler.

Since the FBI had not received Keene’s communication, he was kept in solitary confinement until his prison contact, a psychiatrist, came back from vacation and ordered him removed. Hall’s map showing the locations of his supposed victims had vanished by that time. Keene was released from prison despite revealing his cover before the authorities could obtain the map, and he has subsequently established himself as an author.

The extraordinary true circumstances on which Black Bird is based. Larry Hall was sentenced to prison in 1995 after he abducted 15-year-old Jessica Roach, who had been missing since 1993. For Hall, this would become something of a pattern as he continued to irritate the FBI with fabrications and repeated confessions that he later reneged on. Hall is a twin that was born in Wabash, Indiana. Gary Hall, who was the “average” one and first stood up for his brother, finally assisted the FBI in getting Larry to make confessions.
