Chihayafuru written and illustrated by Yuki Suetsugu is a Japanese manga series targeting adult women. The genre of the series includes Romance, Slice of life, and Sports. The first manga chapter of Chihayafuru was released on 28 December 2007. An anime version of the series was aired from 2011 October to 2012 March. The second season was aired in 2013 from January to June and the third season was aired in 2019 from October to 2020 March. Live adaptations of this series were also released.
The Chihayafuru manga has won the Manga Taishō Award and the 35th Kodansha Manga Award. The fourth volume of the series released on 13 March 2009 made the manga frequently appear in the Japanese comic chart ranking. Around August 2011, it is estimated that the series sold over 4.5 million copies increasing it to 27 million copies by the beginning of 2022, resulting in boosting the popularity of the Japanese sports game Karuta.
The plot of the series is based on Chihaya Ayase, a tomboy school girl who has only one dream, not for her but for her elder sister to be seen as the most successful model in Japan. But that dream soon changed when she met Arata Wataya in her 6th grade of Elementary school. Arata, a quiet boy who transferred to Chihaya’s school was being bullied by her childhood friend named Taichi Mashima for being poor.
Chihaya defends Arata from Taichi and one thing leads to another resulting in Chihaya going to Arata’s house where they play the Karuta game. Despite being young, Arata is a skilled Karuta player and a Karuta lover. At the end of the game, Chihaya manages to get only one card named “Chihayafuru”. Arata compliments her on the Chihayafuru card which she took swiftly without hesitation and by adding that the card is special for her, as it has her name Chihaya on it.
Along with Chihaya and Arata, Taichi also gets involved in playing the Karuta game and they join a Karuta club and play matches. Sadly, Arata is moving back to his hometown as his Grandfather who taught him Karuta gets sick and Taichi moves to a different middle school leaving the Karuta club behind and being. The story continues in high school with Chihaya still playing the Karuta sport and convincing Taichi to start playing the game again. On the other hand, Arata who has stopped playing the game has once again hoped for playing Karuta after meeting the grown-up Taichi and Chihaya.
The plot carries on with Chihaya and Taichi forming a Karuta club in hopes of becoming the ‘Best Karuta Club’ and meeting her friends and Arata again on her way of Karuta Journey.
