To answer the question Is Dirk Gently Holistic Detective Agency Based On True Story, continue reading. Dirk Gently Holistic Detective Agency is a detective show turned absurdist which follows the life of a ‘holistic’ detective, Dirk Gently. Dirk has his own unique way of solving cases that are doing nothing and letting fate take its course in getting him closer to the solution.

He lets the universe show him the way and believes in the interconnectedness of things and his beliefs take him into very sticky situations involving vampires, time travel, a kitten that could be a shark, and many more.

The show came out in 2016 with 2 seasons on Netflix. It is loosely based on the novel by Douglas Adams, the beloved author of Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy, to which Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency was the perpetuation of Adams’ whimsical sense of humor.

Unfortunately, BBC America concluded the show after 2 seasons thanking the star cast and the entire team for their efforts.

The series starts with Todd Brotzman, played by Elijah Wood,  a disgruntled bellboy with a made-up disease that lets him see hallucinations. He finds himself in a bloody fur coat and walks into the scene of the grisly murder of a businessman, Patrick Spring. He gets fired from his job upon the suspicions of the detectives working on the case.

Enters Dirk Gently, played by Samuel Barnett, who decides that Todd is his assistant/best friend or the John Watson to his Sherlock. The viewer also finds out that Patric Spring hired Dirk to investigate his murder six weeks before it even happened!

The show has semblance to the popular detective show, Sherlock, but Dirk Gently solves his cases in a manner which would be considered peculiar by Sherlock so much so that he may call Dirk stupid.

While the show is not based on a true story, it is based on the popular book by Douglas Adams as mentioned above. While the BBC show brings the same characters to the big screen, it doesn’t follow a similar storyline as the book but carries on the theme of unbelievable, bonkers ideas that make the book what it is. Adams based Dirk Gently on the character of Doctor Who so any show about the book would naturally create a detective version of Doctor Who.

Max Landis, the show’s creator, put his own spin on the book described by Douglas as “thumping good detective-ghost-horror-whodunit-time-travel-romantic-musical-comedy-epic”. Dirk Gently in the books is a lazy slob, but in the show, Dirk is over-enthusiastic, over-energetic, and desperate for friends who believe him. The character of Todd is Landis’ creation and another deviation from the book where the persona did not exist.

The 2016 show is not the first time, Dirk Gently shows up on the big screen since another TV series in 2012 attempted its own take on the book with half the budget and aired on a small UK channel written by the Misfits creator and some writers of Doctor Who.

The show is low-key and looks like a slightly different version of Sherlock, while the 2016 show attempts to dazzle the viewers by delving into science fiction mixed with fantasy.
