The TV series begins with a 31-year-old cold case in Seattle which happened to be the first cold case, Moor solved, and that too in two hours. The bodies of Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg were found in 1987 after they suddenly went missing on their drive to Seattle. Since the case didn’t have any leads, the case remained unsolved for three decades until Moore picked it up. When the limited evidence was collected by the police during the investigation, they also unknowingly ended up with the killer’s DNA which Moore utilized to solve the case with the help of state-of-the-art technology.

The ABC show is non-fiction and covers the cases solved by Cece Moore and her genealogy skills. Moore started as a model and actor but changed her path to staying behind the camera at the age of 35. She began writing ad campaigns for her new production company. Her interest in genealogy started as a casual hobby in 2003. As sites like 23andme, which utilized DNA to track family trees, gained popularity throughout the years, her passion became stronger. By 2010, she actively began working towards becoming a genealogist. In the beginning, Moore researched her family tree and worked on her skills by uniting adopted children and their birth families.
Moore paved her own way and taught herself genealogy. In 2013, she started working as a genetic genealogist in Finding Your Roots with Dr. Henry Louis Gates. By 2018, she started using her skills to solve cold cases as a part of Parabon NanoLabs.
