The protagonist of the series is a working-class artist who hunts an immortal creature that preys on youngsters using magical skills. The series’ two seasons, which concluded the plot of the original novel, were terminated in August 2020.

Victoria “Vic” McQueen, a teenage working-class artist who learns she has a magical capacity to trace the ephemeral Charlie Manx, is the main character of NOS4A2. Manx feeds on children’s souls and then dumps what’s left of them in Christmasland, his twisted version of a Christmas village where every day is Christmas and being unhappy is against the law. Vic must work to stop Manx and save his victims—without going insane or becoming one of his victims.

A young child is enticed by the immortal Charlie Manx, 135 years old, to board his 1938 Rolls-Royce Wraith and travel with him to Christmasland, a fantastical locale “where every day is Christmas and unhappiness is against the law.” Victoria “Vic” McQueen, a local from Haverhill, Massachusetts, learns she has supernatural powers when she can pass through a long-gone covered bridge. Vic meets Maggie, a medium who searches for explanations for the bizarre events using Scrabble tiles, after crossing the Shorter Way bridge into Here, Iowa.

Vic is a Strong Creative like her, she says and has been picked to look for missing children who Charlie Manx has abducted. The third book by author Joe Hill, NOS4A2, tells the decades-long tale of a struggle of wills between Vic McQueen, a young lady, and Charlie Manx, a supernatural figure. Manx is a psychic vampire who feeds off the children he imprisons in a nightmare netherworld known as Christmasland. Vic has psychic abilities that allow her to find lost things. As a sort of precursor to the book, Hill has also produced a graphic novel titled Wraith.

With her affluent friends, Vic travels to her ideal art school, RISD. Vic forges her father’s signature on a tax return on the instruction of Willa since she believes that her dream is out of reach without financial assistance. Back in Haverhill, Manx feels the presence of a Strong Creative, an elderly woman who portal using her roller skates as her “knife” in the town’s psychiatric unit. Manx, with the assistance of Bing Partridge, tries to find Vic by the Shorter Way bridge but instead runs into Haley, a young neighbour of Vic who is searching for her missing cat Mittens.

Later, Bing abducts Haley and uses sevoflurane to gas Haley’s mother while donning a gas mask. Vic returns to Christmasland for Maggie after taking Wayne to the Sleigh House, and Lou and Tabitha understand that destroying the decorations makes the children normal again. Vic drops the Wraith off the bridge and into the static below, killing Manx after he chases Vic and Maggie there while severely injured. Following the incident, although Millie, who won’t break her ornament, plans to reconstruct Christmasland and bring the kids back, Wayne and the other children find it difficult to adjust to life as usual.

In defiance of Vic’s wishes, Maggie begins looking for others who are like herself as Vic, Lou, and Wayne return to Haverhill. A month after his defeat, Manx’s body and the wrecked Wraith wash up in Haverhill. Manx is cremated, and the
