Two murders that took place in Nottinghamshire in 2004 and led to one of the largest manhunts in British policing history are the inspiration for “Sherwood.” Although the characters in “Sherwood” were fictionalized by Nottinghamshire-native and screenwriter James Graham (Ink, Finding Neverland, Brexit: The Uncivil War), the plot itself remained quite similar.

Former NUM (National Union of Miners) member Keith Frogson was brutally killed in 2004 by resident Robert Boyer using a Samurai sword and crossbow. Boyer was labeled a scab by the miners union because he had additionally endured the miners’ strikes 30 years previously. This is where the murders’ political component becomes apparent.

Boyer then went into hiding in the nearby Sherwood forest, emerging only to set fire to Mr. Frogson’s house while his daughter and son-in-law were inside. Thank goodness, neither of them was hurt. The second murder in Nottinghamshire occurred in the same few weeks; this one was committed by former miner Terry Rodgers against his daughter Chanel. Only 17 days prior, Rodgers had escorted his daughter down the aisle and shot her.

The largest manhunts in British history were launched after Rodgers, who fled and hid in Sherwood forest, followed Boyer’s example. Three weeks after the killings, both murderers were apprehended. Boyer entered a guilty plea and it was revealed that he suffered from severe mental illness; he had attacked Frogson because he believed the man was attempting to destroy his home. The murder had absolutely nothing to do with the miners’ strike.

According to prosecutor Andrew Easteal, the miners’ strike was initially thought to have been a factor in this tragedy’s beginning. May I state unequivocally that the suggestion is completely incorrect? That miscommunication resulted from the fact that Ferguson was a prominent NUM member and Boyer was a miner who continued to work during the strike. But until his arrest, Boyer was completely unaware of this.

Looking back at the Terry Rodgers murder, the accused maintained his innocence while acknowledging Chanel’s man-eating. However, this appeal was rejected, and he was sentenced to prison in 2004. Rodger, however, refused to eat for two years while he was incarcerated, and as a result, he died in 2006 from malnutrition.
