Blanc ultimately puts the full sequence of happenings together. He says that although Marta thought she had unintentionally poisoned Harlan, she had given him the right amount of morphine. Harlan commits suicide to save Marta. However, Ransom pays Blanc to accuse Marta of murder knowing that she will receive Harlan’s belongings as an inheritance.
Fran, however, discovers that Ransom is the one who attempted to conceal evidence and concludes that he is the real murderer (indirectly). Fran tries to extort Ransom, but Marta receives the note instead. This ultimately leads to more misunderstanding, but Ransom is eventually apprehended after Marta and Blanc videotape his confession. In the climactic scene, Linda, Harlan’s daughter, discovers from yet another note that Richard is truly having an affair with her.
