Based on a true crime, Making A Murderer Season 3 is an American documentary series that deals with the life of Steven Avery who hailed from Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, and was wrongfully convicted of sexual assault and murder of Penny Beernsten for which he had to serve 18 years in prison from 1985 to 2003.
Directed by Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, this series is then linked with that of another conviction that Avery had to face in 2005 along with Brendan Dassey. Avery was charged with the murder of a photographer named Teresa Halbach while Brendan was convicted of being an accomplice to Avery.
The first season of the series got released in 2015 and the second in the year 2018. Both the seasons got great reviews and were a huge success with an 8.6 rating on IMDB and 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. Such was the success that after the viewers completed watching the series, they started a “Free Avery and Dassey” movement for they were convinced that Avery and Dassey were wrongfully convicted.

Making a Murderer is based on true events and deals with the lives of convicts Steven Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey. Having been released from prison because of wrongful conviction, Avery went on to show the world the corruption in the judiciary system, the very moment in which he was again charged with the murder of certain Teresa Halbach. The whole series revolves around the proceedings of the Avery-Dassey-Halbach case.

Before I talk more about Season 3, let’s recall what all things happened in the previous two seasons. In the first season, we observed the Police and Judicial misconduct that resulted in the loss of 18 years of Avery’s life.
Because of the absence of DNA testing technology in those times, Avery was found guilty of assaulting Penny Beernsten and was given a sentence of thirty-two years imprisonment. It was in the year 2003 that Avery was exonerated and released, and in return, he filed a $36 million lawsuit against the County and the Law Enforcement officials and ultimately went on to settle for $4,00,000.
His freedom was however short-lived for he was again convicted of murdering a photographer named Teresa Halbach and was arrested at that very moment. The case turned interesting when Brendan Dassey confessed that Avery raped and murdered Halbach and burnt her body to wipe off all the pieces of evidence.
With the $4,00,000 that Avery gained from the lawsuit, he hired Kathleen Zellner who went on to become the star of the Season 2 of the docu-series. She put forward many important aspects such as the tampering with Avery’s blood sample, the inspectors’ influence on the confession of Dassey and most importantly the presence of the law officials from the previous County and their involvement in the proceedings of the Avery-Dassey-Halbach case.

They succeeded in evoking a feeling of sympathy for Avery in the minds of the viewers.

The makers of the docu-series have not yet confirmed the release of Season 3. The first season premiered in 2015 and the second season was released after three years. The third season could discuss the proceedings, investigation and inquiries of the Avery case. It would be interesting to see how Ricciardi and Demos unfold the story further.

The series went on to become a huge success winning 4 Primetime Emmy Awards with a total of 14 wins and 13 nominations.
