Here is all the information we currently have about the upcoming Disney+ streaming series Marvel’s Secret Invasion. The Disney+ production continues the story of Nick Fury and the Skrull Talos, who previously shared screen time in both Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Far From Home, as part of the MCU’s Phase 5 release.
The TV show, which will be based on the same-titled comic book series, already makes a promise to inject a good amount of sci-fi horror into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Comic Story Of Secret Invasion
The eight episodes of the crossover series focus primarily on the invasion of Earth by the Skrulls and how they adopt the identities of various superheroes. A near-catastrophe on Earth is caused by a war between the Kree, Captain Marvel’s species, and the Skrulls, a race of shape-shifting aliens that frequently mimic Marvel characters.
The Illuminati, a covert superhero group, issues a warning to the Skrulls to stay away in response, but they are later abducted and studied without really understanding what happened. When the shapeshifters eventually invade Earth, they can replace a number of superheroes. This story will be partially adapted for the MCU, but with its own Samuel L. Jackson Nick Fury interpretation of the facts, in order to fulfill teases that were subtly inserted throughout a number of MCU films and television programs.
The Trailor Break-Down Of Secret Invasion
After its Comic-Con updates that same year, the D23 Expo in 2022 provided more insight into Secret Invasion. Most significantly, Disney has made an official trailer available. Regardless of whether Nick Fury and Maria Hill are the real deal or just Skrull impersonators, the footage shows them meeting to talk about a mysterious new threat that was so serious that Fury was prepared to come back from space.
Nobody, not even the security team protecting James Rhodes/War Machine, can be trusted. Ben Mendelsohn’s portrayal of Talos (who appears to be at odds with his own race) suggests that the Skrulls aren’t even secure from one another.
All of these revelations from the trailer support previously known plot points, but there are also some unexpected turns. Everett Ross played by Martin Freeman is back, and Sonyal Falsworth played by Olivia Colman and Emilia Clarke in Secret Invasion were both seen for the first time by viewers. Additionally, the teaser suggests that the alien race may have a secret objective that only Nick Fury knows about. The absence of Nick Fury’s signature eye patch and the exposure of his left eye are both significant.
The Storyline Of Secret Invasion
The plot of of this show, which takes place in The Blip, the five-year time after Thanos’s snap, in which half of all life was wiped off, is centered on an invasion of Earth by renegade Skrulls. The story was introduced in Captain Marvel, which alters the comic book premise by depicting the Skrull shapeshifters as heroes who avoid the Kree Empire’s extermination squads. In Spider-Man: Far From Home, a scene in the end credits reveals that Sharon Blynn and Samuel L. Jackson’s characters Talos and his wife Soren are actually Nick Fury and Maria Hill, who are carrying out orders until Fury returns from an interplanetary mission.
With the introduction of the evil Skrulls in Secret Invasion, Talos’ plan is made more challenging by their hidden campaign against Earth’s superheroes. The MCU chronological issues are exacerbated when Marvel’s Secret Invasion is positioned before The Blip.
The Connection between Marvel & Secret Invasion
Tony Stark, Black Bolt, Namor, Mister Fantastic, Charles Xavier, and Doctor Strange make up the Marvel Comics Illuminati. The story will need to be changed for the Secret Invasion adaptation because the organization doesn’t officially exist on Earth-616 in the MCU yet (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness introduced a version from another universe).
The reason the rogue Skrulls invade Earth is that they have information from earlier kidnappings of Illuminati members, which is probably not the case in the Disney+ Secret Invasion. Disney and Kevin Feige have described it as a crossover event, thus there will be several connections to the other MCU films.
The Cast Of Secret Invasion
In the upcoming film Secret Invasion, Samuel L. Jackson will play an aged Nick Fury, who previously oversaw a Skrull vessel during the events in Spiderman: Far from Home. In addition, Ben Mendelsohn, who previously played Talos in Spider-Man: Far From Home and Captain Marvel’s secret role as Nick Fury’s superior, is back. As Maria Hill, Nick’s closest confidante since the days of S.H.I.E.L.D., Cobie Smulders has also been confirmed to return.
Kingsley Ben-Adir, a British actor, has been hired in a mysterious villain role, and, as is customary for Marvel Studios, roles that have not yet been made public will be played by Olivia Colman, Killian Scott, Christopher McDonald, and Carmen Ejogo. It’s interesting to note that McDonald has declined to confirm or dismiss reports that he will be Norman Osborn in the MCU. Additionally, it has been revealed that Don Cheadle will return to Marvel’s Secret Invasion series as James Rhodes/War Machine. Finally, Emilia Clarke will play the mutant SWORD agent Abigail Brand in Secret Invasion, adding a new mutation to the mix.
The Release Date Of Secret Invasion
Marvel’s Secret Invasion has yet to have an official release date determined by Disney, however, Kevin Feige said at Comic-Con 2022 that the show would begin airing sometime in the spring of 2023. Since Secret Invasion started filming in the fall of 2021, it is hoped that it would be able to air as scheduled in the first half of 2023.
