Devi has always had the goal of attending Princeton, and her academic record supports her aspirations. But at the start of the finale, the principal of Sherman Oaks shares some enticing news with her that might set her apart from qualified candidates: She has been nominated for and admitted to the Shrubland School, a top boarding school in Colorado, for a one-year program.
Of course, the girl would have to forego spending her senior year in California with her best friends Fabiola and Eleanor, and she isn’t too excited about that prospect (and neither are they). Ben, Devi’s competition and potential love interest, tries to reason with her (after some seductive jabs, of course) and convinces her that it would be foolish not to at least examine the possibility.
Never Have I Ever Season 3 Recap
Devi’s mother Nalini (Poorna Jagannathan) is not quite convinced that enrolling in the school is in Devi’s best interests, but her cousin Kamala (Richa Moorjani), and her boyfriend Manish (Utkarsh Ambudkar), a teacher, do. However, in secret, Kamala persuades Nalini that she should encourage Devi and support her, and soon the mother-daughter pair fly to Colorado to visit the school. Devi is immediately put off when she first arrives at the Shrubland School by how open the campus is.
She is inspired and discovers for the first time that it is “nice to be smart” when she observes a class and sees how serious the kids are. Devi informs her friends back in Sherman Oaks that she has chosen to participate in the program, and they are naturally disappointed. But since the senior class is set to graduate and Devi’s previous love interest Paxton (Darren Barnet), is scheduled to give a speech, they have other things to keep them occupied.
The big event has arrived: graduation. All of the seniors are lined up and ready to march to their seats. Trent (Benjamin Norris), Paxton’s closest friend, is seated in the audience, but Eleanor, who has been dating him all season, observes that he hasn’t even put on his cap and gown. Trent feigns shame when he informs his girlfriend that he failed his senior year and must retake it. Eleanor, who is a year behind him, is thrilled to spend another year at the school with her boyfriend instead of being disappointed, as he had anticipated.
Paxton enters the stage in the meantime and astounds everyone with his perceptive class address. When he describes how she encouraged him to push himself and put more emphasis on his studies, Devi is especially moved. She suddenly becomes aware, nevertheless, that she no longer harbors love sentiments for her old flame.
Never Have I Ever Season 3 Ending Explained
Upon learning that Devi will be joining the Shrubland School after graduation, Ben tells her in private that he doesn’t want her to go since he will miss her. Devi suddenly experiences butterflies in her stomach, but Paxton intervenes and awkwardly leaves. Paxton thanks Devi for helping him get through his senior year as they talk. He was “a fantasy,” she says, and that helped her get over the loss of her father. The exchange is cordial yet platonic. Devi decides to tell her mother that she doesn’t want to leave home while she’s on her way home after realizing that she’s wasted too much time thinking about the future.
When Devi gets to Ben’s place, he is amazed when she pulls out the paper. He grinned and opened the door when she shrugged. The door closes behind them and the two share a kiss.
