‘Schmigadoon! ‘ is a contemporary musical comedy series that centers on a couple stuck in a stale romantic relationship and stranded in a fantastical old town. To the annoyance of Josh (Keegan-Michael Key), the town’s elaborate musical performances start at the drop of a hat and are motivated by things as simple as the mention of “Corn Puddin.” However, there is a deeper purpose for the town’s existence hidden behind all the caricature-like characters that populate the fantasy world that Josh and Melissa (Cecily Strong) find themselves trapped within.

Two overworked doctors Josh and Melissa meet at a broken hospital vending machine where a small kick to the candy dispenser causes a torrent of chocolate bars at the start of the first episode. The unforgettable encounter quickly develops into love, and we then get to see the two of them enjoying their first anniversary together. Sweet romantic gestures are still a part of their relationship even though there aren’t as many sparks soaring anymore. Three years later, though, we witness a disgruntled Melissa munching candy in bed next to a sleeping Josh, indicating that their relationship has undoubtedly become routine.

The two enroll in the seven-day Sacred Heart Love Trail, a program designed for couples who wish to bring passion back into their lives, in an effort to rekindle the flame. Josh is dubious of the program managers’ ostensibly corny tactics, and the quarreling pair stumbles onto a bizarre old village while on a torturous climb in the rain, where they are greeted with a lengthy welcome song. Melissa persuades Josh to spend the night there once her curiosity is aroused. They decide to stay despite Josh’s suspicions about being charged only $1 for the two rooms and She finds it a little odd that they must obtain separate rooms because they are not married.

The following morning, after a straightforward conversation about breakfast specials, causes the town’s constant population to erupt into song (again! ), Josh decides to leave with Melissa by his side. They quickly discover themselves on a bridge, however, with the town on either side, making it hard for them to escape. The two understand that they are trapped in the fantastical town of Schmigadoon until they are completely in love with each other when a leprechaun who emerges out of nowhere confirms their worries that they are trapped in an illusory world.

Schmigadoon is an appropriate name for the really bizarre town Josh and Melissa find. The name of the town is perhaps a reference to the well-known Broadway musical “Brigadoon” from the 1940s, which tells a love story focused around a mystical Scottish settlement of the same name that emerged for one day each year. The name “Brigadoon” was probably taken from a medieval bridge that could be found in Scotland’s historic Ayrshire region, where the term “brig” means “bridge.” As a result, “Bridge o’ Doon” or “Bridge over the river Doon” might be shortened to “Bridge o’ Doon” or “Bridge.” In addition, certain Scottish £5 banknotes have an image of the bridge.

The village appears to be stuck in a simpler era that hasn’t been damaged by the pressures of contemporary life (as is seen when Josh wants to check his email and the innkeeper helpfully informs him that the mail cart will not show up until the next week). The town also boasts an endearingly jovial mayor named Aloysius Menlove, who wins every election without any opposition but still distributes buttons because “Who doesn’t love buttons?”

The settlement, which seems to exist in the forgetfulness of the world around it, clearly has a supernatural quality. Josh and Melissa also run into a leprechaun at the end of the episode, who not only completely defies Josh’s perception of reality but also tells them they are trapped there until they find true love, which appears to be the town of Schmigadoon’s purpose.
