Topher’s trousers and shoes are covered in dirt when Daisy wakes him up for school. He pleads with her not to inform his mother and claims to have been sleepwalking. When Daisy runs into Griffin at school, she tells him about Topher’s mud-covered condition. Griffin advises her to keep quiet and avoid talking to anyone because she is anxious about starting school, but in her first history class, there is a pop quiz on World War II, a significant event that has not yet occurred in her lifetime. Mrs. Roth requests a meeting with her after school because she got every question wrong despite being a typically strong student. She lets her know that tomorrow’s quiz can be made up.

Sam has been persuaded to complete the time machine by Savannah, who has promised to meet him in the basement after supper. Later, Savannah finds out that Sam went back to the springs because he believes his mother’s life was prolonged by the crystals there, which he believes had healing abilities. He wants to use the time machine to travel to a time when they can cure her, and then return to the present to save her life. The power goes out when he turns on the radio.

Water is seeping out of room 205, so Sarah and Jess work to mop it up. She can’t open the door, and the water smells like the springs. Topher is ready to attempt when he notices that the wood is expanding as though the space were taking a breath. From the top of the door frame, a trickle of black goo appears.

Ben notices the mirror is broken as he runs to the basement to collect some tools. When he goes down to pick up the mask from the ground after seeing it there, he can make out the fallout shelter emblem through the shelves. He locates the bunker, which is occupied by Harper and Savannah.

The Tremont is on fire in Griffin in 2024. When hands grab him and hold him back from entering, he is just about to do so. Sam reveals to him that the hotel is empty and has been for some time.
