After the tremendous success of Season 1, the Grishaverse and their characters will now be returning for another great adventure in the brand-new Shadow and Bone Season 2.
With an academy nomination for the film “Arrival” and co-writer of Conjuring 2 film, Eric Andrew Heisserer is the creator, head writer, showrunner, and also executive producer of Season 1 and Season 2 of Shadow and Bone. Based on Leigh Bardugo’s book two in her series the Shadow and Bone trilogy and Six of Crows Duology- the magical world, Grisha has more in store for its fans. Shadow and Bone Season 2 Storyline
“Fear is a phoenix. You can watch it burn a thousand times and still it will return.” If you remember reading these words, chances are that you have read the wonderful books of Grishaverse, written by the very famous Leigh Bardugo.
The Grishaverse has been turned into a series, which has already streamed its Season 1. It showcased the story of Alina, a Grisha with Sun Summoning powers fabled to save the country from Shadow Fold.
Along with Shadow and Bone trilogy, the show simultaneously brings to life the Six of Crows book series too in the same world. Kaz, Inej, and Jesper are some of the famous Six of Crows characters that feature in Season 1, and more interesting roles are expected to show up in Season 2.
The crows have their own storyline as they were initially tasked with kidnapping Alina, and for this, they infiltrate Little Palace where Alina herself climbs in their carriage. She does this after learning from Baghra that she should trust Kerrigan who has no plans to destroy the fold but actually wants to use it as a weapon.
While Mal and Alina look for Stag, she’s recaptured by Kirigan and after getting Stag’s antler on her collar, she’s also under his control. They all journey to the Fold, where crows and Mal have snuck in on the ship, and when everyone sees Kirigan actually expanding the Fold on West Ravka, Zoye also turns on him. Alina, who cuts the antler, becomes free from his control and with Crow’s help, fends off Kirigan’s forces. Mal who moved irrationally Kirigan initially fights him but Kirigan is suddenly taken away by Volcra.
Alina, Zoye, and Mal along with Crows being the only survivors, leave the Fold together and decide to go their separate way. However, the ending scenes show an injured Kirigan emerging from the Fold.
Shadow and Bone Season 2 Cast
The old cast of Season 1 will be returning as well as some new faces and characters joining them for season 2.
- Jessie Mei Li plays orphan Alina Starkov, a former cartographer in the First Army. She finds out that she’s a Grisha, with the ability to control and bend light.
- Archie Renaux plays Malyen “Mal” Oretsev, Alina’s childhood best friend who tracked orphans in the first army.
- Ben Barnes here plays General Aleksander Kirigan / The Darkling, general of the Second Army who’s very interested in Alina’s powers and acts like he cares but is actually a Shadow Summoner, causing darkness in the country.
- Freddy Carter, Amita Suman, and Kit Young star as Kaz Brekker, leader of the Crows, nicknamed Dirtyhands, Inej Ghafa, also known as Wraith, and Jesper Fahey, who’s a sharpshooter. They are the 3 members of Six of Crows.
- Sujaya Dasgupta, Danielle Galligan, Daisy Head, and Simon Sears, Calahan Skogman, Zoë Wanamaker, Kevin Eldon, Julian Kostov, Luke Pasqualino, Jasmine Blackborow would be joining as recurring cast members.
- The author of the series, Leigh Bardugo plays a cameo in Season 1 too.
Season 2 will see some new additions to it as some more characters of the 2 book series join the team.
- Lewis Tan as Tolya Yul-Bataar, the twin brother of Tamar and a scholarly fighter who’s also a Heartrender. He has complete faith in his captain.
- Famous for the mystery Sci-fi series ‘The OA’, Patrick Gibson who played Steve Winchell there joins the team as Nikolai Lantsov, the captain of the ship Hummingbird, a roguish and brash man who has great fighting skills.
- Anna Leong Brophy as Tamar Kir-Bataar, the twin sister of Tolya. She’s also a Heartrender and a deadly sword fighter who fights with two swords. Like his brother, she’s been on the ship from day 1 and both of them are loyal friends to the captain as well as religious, worshipping the Saints.
- A stage name, Jack Wolfe portrays Wylan Hendriks. He’s another one of the crows but the only one with a merchant background and who doesn’t fit into the barrel. He sticks out among the group but has excellent skills in demolition.
Shadow and Bone Season 2 Release Date
After the end of Season 1 in April 2021, season 2 of the show was announced just a couple of months later in June 2021. Season 2 is slated to have 8 episodes as well. In January 2022, the production and filming for the show were confirmed.
Heisserer confirmed that the writing for Season 2 has finished, on his official Twitter account, and Netflix in its TUDUM event hinted that the show might release in 2023.
Although the official release date has not been released yet, Netflix teased its fans with a teaser in September 2022, that has Ben Barnes as General Kirigan, asking, “Are you ready to sacrifice what is most precious to you?”
Shadow and Bone Season 2 Plot
Taking place in 19th century Russia, the story is set up where half the population is Grisha, the people with magical abilities and skills to use one of the elements of nature for purposes, like fighting, healing, etc.
Young Alina who’s an orphan and her best friend Mal, the only person she can rely on, join the First Army. Mal, who tracks orphans, is ordered with his team to cross the dark and dangerous expanse of Shadow Fold, a large region that divides the country in almost half. It’s full of monsters called Volcra and is extremely threatening for everyone as they can supposedly be killed only by a Grisha with the power of Sun.
Finding Mal in a life-threatening situation, Alina who joined the army as a cartographer and then followed Mal on the journey through Shadow Fold, summons the powers of the Sun to save him. She herself was unaware of having such powers and is hailed as the savior, the one who can destroy the Shadow Fold.
Whereas the crows, in Ketterdam, try to get a job that pays 1 million kruge, against the Mob boss Pekka Rollins. When Kaz, their leader, secures the job by getting to a Heartrender, it is revealed that their job is to kidnap Alina. So Kaz, Inej, and Jesper along with Arken who’s the conductor to ferry them across the Fold and look for ways to get inside Little Palace, without the help of Heartrender Nina Zenik, who is captured by drüskelle (Grisha hunters.)
