A double wedding—no, a triple wedding—with people, dogs, and horses all making their way to the altar would be featured in the season finale of Hulu’s Shrill. But in the middle of filming eight episodes in Portland, Team Shrill learned that the third season would be the last of the series, and the season finale quickly turned into the series finale. The trailblazing comedy about gender, body image, and what it means when women own their power doesn’t include an animal wedding, yet it’s the perfect farewell.
Shrill Season 3 Recap
After splitting up with her unfaithful lover in the Season Two finale, Annie Easton, played by Aidy Bryant, enters Season Three with renewed vigor. Although Annie is feeling more liberated than ever, she is juggling men and new challenges in her job as a journalist at The Thorn. However, she still doesn’t have it all figured out. The last season presents her with a plethora of obstacles, some coming from outside sources (such as a fatphobic doctor who advises weight loss surgery) and some coming from her internal compass, which is still insufficiently calibrated for navigating her white privilege and self-hatred.
In one episode, Annie is made to answer for her reporting on a group of white separatists when it becomes viral for the wrong reasons. In another, Annie ruins a blind date with her new boyfriend Will only to later realize that her internalized fatphobia is keeping her from being happy.
The third and last season of the show, which debuted on Hulu on May 7, solidifies its reputation as a series that is completely at ease with itself. Annie navigating singlehood as a woman who is confident in herself for the first time in her life receives just as much narrative weight as Fran’s budding connection with Em (a scene-stealing E.R. Fightmaster). The season also leaves room for Fran and Annie to have a meaningful argument when Fran declines to defend her ignorant friend after Annie produces an essay that seems to defend bigots. Their friendship has developed and matured as much as they have by the conclusion of the season, and consequently, the entire program.
Shrill Season 3 Ending Explained
It’s somewhat shocking that the third season finishes on a deliberate anti-climax, shortening both Annie and Fran’s tales as well as the entire series because it’s so crisp and clever about building the foundation for their future. After a disastrous dispute with her low-key new lover Will (Cameron Britton), who she had previously passed off until realising he might be right for her, Annie finds herself reeling from her promotion. Fran meets her with a bottle of wine as a gesture of goodwill because she and Em had just had a heated argument over whether or not to move in together.
The final scene of “Shrill” shows Annie and Fran crying together while sitting on a park bench, thinking about how their lives will change if they embrace the type of change that has previously made them feel uncontrollably terrified. It’s a beautiful sequence, and there is something to be said for a series that is self-assured enough to leave the audience with some doubt rather than neatly tie up all the loose ends. But given that there are a tonne more, it’s also undoubtedly frustrating to understand that this is the final time we’ll ever see “Shrill” and these people.
It would have been lovely to watch Fran overcome her tendencies to run or fight to start a relationship with Em, the devoted and enjoyable companion of her fantasies. Whatever else Fran and Annie may get up to, or however else they manage to ruin their own lives against themselves, “Shrill” has proven to be more than capable of portraying their stories with wit and a great eye for the unexpected ways that life can be bizarre, wild, and amusing. Losing a show at its height is tragic, but the fact that “Shrill” held up so well throughout its run is a credit to how well it evolved.
