Slow Horses is an espionage thriller television series based on Mick Herron’s 2010 novel of the same name. Apple TV+ ordered the project straight to series in October 2019, with Gary Oldman set to appear.
Olivia Cooke, Jonathan Pryce, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Jack Lowden were added to the cast in December 2020. The show will be divided into two series, each with six episodes. The first six episodes are said to be based on Mick Herron’s first book, Slow Horses, and the next six on the sequel, Dead Lions.
Slow Horses Cast
Gary Oldman plays Jackson Lamb, the repulsive boss of Slough House in Slow Horses. Gary rose to prominence in 1986 as the Sex Pistols musician Sid Vicious in Sid and Nancy. He received an Oscar nomination for his performance as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. Slow Horses features a slew of other notable British names. Kristin originally captured our hearts as Fiona in Four Weddings and a Funeral, and she has since appeared in The English Patient, The Horse Whisperer, and The Other Boleyn Girl.
Rising actor Jack Lowden, known for his roles in the war films Dunkirk and Fighting with My Family, as well as BBC1’s War and Peace, plays dissatisfied River Cartwright, while Freddie Fox, who appeared in White House Farm, plays Spider Webb. The series also stars Jonathan Pryce, Sophie Okonedo, Rosalind Eleazar, and Dustin Demri-Burns.
Slow Horses Plot
Slow Horses depicts a group of British intelligence officers who work in MI5’s dumping ground, Slough House. Jackson Lamb, the bright but irascible commander of the spies who wound up at Slough House as a result of their career-ending blunders, is played by Gary Oldman. Academy Award contender Kristin Scott Thomas, Academy Award nominee Jonathan Pryce, BAFTA Scotland Award winner Jack Lowden (“Dunkirk”), and Olivia Cooke (“Sound of Metal”) join Oldman in the cast.
Slow Horses Storyline
True intelligence officers do not resemble James Bond or Jason Bourne. You can’t go completely renegade and expect to come out unhurt. If you fail, you may be condemned to purgatory – not the biblical kind, but an earthly one. MI5 has one, nicknamed the Slough House, where unsuccessful and rejected operatives are transferred to end their careers. Slow Horses, Apple TV+’s new spy series, suggests as much. The program follows a group of MI5 agents who all work at the Slough House as a result of career-ending blunders.
The storyline revolves around an MI5 agent who fails his training mission and is assigned to the Slough House as a paper pusher and keyboard thumper until he discovers something sinister that threatens the entire nation. So he gathers his teammates and resolves to return to the field to show himself and his team’s value once more.
When River Cartwright (Jack Lowden), a rookie at Slough House, finds a crime and reports it to Lamb, the grumpy boss-man immediately discourages the young agent. As a result, Cartwright and his employees attempt to solve the crime and eliminate the danger themselves. Soon after, the higher-ups approach Lamb for help, and he has little option but to get involved.
In other words, Slow Horse is a narrative about underdogs, and spies who are unknown to the rest of the world unless they prove themselves. It’s also about a team leader who, in the face of adversity, defends and supports his team.

Slow Horses Trailer
On March 2, 2022, Apple TV+ unveiled the official trailer for Slow Horses, and based on the video, the new series appears to be interesting and fun.
The video introduces the spectator to Slough House, where we witness a slew of disgruntled workers who have ended themselves in this dumping ground for failing MI5 operatives known as the slow horses. The teaser also introduces us to Jackson Lamb, the department’s supervisor, played by Gary Oldman. Lamb appears to be the most unhappy of them, bored to death with his life and profession and showing little desire in changing his or others’.
Furthermore, he regularly discourages his workers and expects them to leave. When a hostage scenario appears on the department’s radar and his squad (whom he refers to as “his losers”) attempts to handle it, Lamb is forced to become directly involved. Overall, the trailer is a blend of dark comedy, fast-paced action, and all the adrenaline of a thriller series, indicating that the new series has some promise.
