The Big Sick, based on the real love story of Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon is about a young Muslim man who falls for a white girl.

Kumail is a stand-up comedian and Emily is a graduate student, planning on becoming a therapist. Kumail is struggling which is why he’s also working as an Uber driver. They both meet at his comedy show which ends up with them spending some intimate together. Emily had actually heckled him during his set which led to their meeting.

Kumail, a Muslim living in a foreign land falls for Emily but he can’t disclose that to his family. Kumail has an elder brother who had an arranged marriage and seems perfectly content with his life. His parents want him to be happy but also follow his culture and traditions which is important for them.

Soon Emily gets sick which leads her to be in a medically-induced coma. Still fresh in their relationship, Kumail gets the opportunity to meet Emily’s parents in these circumstances while she lies on the hospital bed. The story moves on to focus on the relationship between Kumail and Emily’s parents as they stay beside her while she recovers.

Kumail has to perform a stand-up show for Emily’s parents. He is pestered by his parents with a box filled with pictures of potential brides. Emily’s parents initially dismiss him. But Emily’s mother also shuts down one of Kumail’s hecklers at a show when he makes racist comments.

The movie circles around several ideas but it’s done really well. This movie is a story of a meet-cute, a generational gap, arranged marriages, and what it means to love one’s culture and traditions with enough freedom.

The Big Sick Review

The Big Sick Review
The Big Sick Review

The movie sure has romance and comedy but it also gives us a chance to look at the racism that’s endured by Kumail. The film shows vulnerability and a very crucial time in the couple’s life. It shows their chemistry which is enjoyable and only grows more as the film progresses. It’s a feel-good movie that focuses on real relationships instead of plot twists or grand gestures.

The representation of overbearing, emotional parents brings a fresh touch to their story. However, the relationship between Kumail and Emily’s parents will steal your heart. With the three people who have one thing in common: Emily, lying on the bed, it’s heart-warming to watch them move on from being cold to each other to accepting each other with open arms.
