In The Cuphead Show!, Cuphead and Mugman, two anthropomorphic cup brothers who reside on Inkwell Isle with their elderly grandfather and caretaker Elder Kettle in a teapot-shaped cottage, are followed as they get into mischief. The brothers frequently strive to solve problems in their stories, occasionally running across and interacting with characters from the source material. The Devil, the game’s main opponent, frequently attempts to steal Cuphead’s soul after a failed soul harvesting operation, but he is consistently thwarted by Cuphead and Mugman.

Cuphead and Mugman try to escape jail after being apprehended in the season 1 finale. The guard dogs, however, catch them after each attempt they make. Mugman resolves to quit since he believes they would never succeed in getting out, but Cuphead won’t give up because he believes he has a failsafe method. Cuphead makes an independent escape attempt while Mugman becomes accustomed to prison life, but he ends up in the electric chair room.

Following this unsuccessful attempt, Cuphead resolves to give up as well, but Mugman claims to have a solution because he is aware that his brother rarely gives up. After a much-anticipated reunion, Cuphead, Mugman, and Ms. Chalice pull off a scam as “ghost removers,” but when they run into ghostly quadruplets who want to swap places with them, they get more than they bargained for. The trio eventually captures the quadruplets after a protracted chase and returns to their home.

Werner Werman, a pestilent mouse with a German accent, keeps trying to take over Cuphead and Mugman’s house as they attempt to bake a surprise cake for Elder Kettle. Elder Kettle decides to take on Werner alone after their battle with the mouse wrecks havoc in the kitchen. After tricking Werner into signing a deed paper containing dynamite, which explodes on Werner, Werner is forced to flee in annoyance.

When Cuphead and Mugman keep arguing over what they each want to do, it makes it harder for Elder Kettle to take the perfect family photo than it initially appears. This is especially true after the brothers unintentionally come across an advertisement that reveals a shameful secret from Elder Kettle’s past. Elder Kettle is upset about it, so he tells Cuphead and Mugman that he was the winner of a baby contest when he was a baby, but that because of bullying as a child, he destroyed the advertisements that showed him when he was a young adult.

On their way back home, the brothers decide to show everyone the advertisement and the photo of Elder Kettle to persuade him to accede to their requests. Elder Kettle assigns Cuphead and Mugman to scour the nearby forests for additional wood. But when Cuphead and Mugman get lost in the woods due to their carelessness, they are forced to go it alone. After getting lost on his own, Cuphead locates Mugman in a cabin he built himself.

After fighting over it, they realize they were nearby their house the entire time. Mugman apologizes to Cuphead for his previous outbursts, but Cuphead hooks him to a massive rocket (apparently not having learned his lesson). In response to Cuphead’s continued refusal to return the pitchfork, the Devil kidnaps Mugman. Cuphead is horrified and devastated, and the second season ends on a cliffhanger.
