The Great Season 1 was filmed primarily in Lithuania, with some scenes shot in Latvia and France. The production team didn’t want to film in Russia because it would have been too expensive and they wanted to keep the budget low. Lithuania was the perfect choice because it’s a beautiful country with a lot of history.

Season 2

The series stars Elle Fanning as the young Empress and Nicholas Hoult as her husband, Emperor Peter. The cast also includes Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, and Charity Wakefield.

Lithuania was chosen for its diverse landscapes, which were perfect for filming the 18th-century Russian Empire. The country has a wide variety of locations, from forests to rivers to mountains, all of which are within a short drive from the capital, Vilnius.

The crew also made use of Lithuania’s many historical buildings, including the 15th-century Trakai Island Castle, which served as the imperial palace, and the 18th-century Rundale Palace, which was used for exteriors and interiors of the palace in Saint Petersburg.

The Great was created and written by Tony McNamara, who also directed several episodes. The series is produced by Marian Macgowan and executive produced by McNamara, Macgowan, Fanning, and Hoult.
