The Staircase is an American TV series released in 2022 which is related to a true crime based on the 2004 documentary series The Staircase created by Jean-Xavier de Lestrade. The Staircase is created and directed by Antonio Campos, few episodes were also directed by Leigh Janiak. The Staircase is a Mini-Series consisting of 8 episodes. The members of the original documentary team criticized the series as they find too many changes in the story and also in an editorial way. The series brings us a fresh dramatization between the characters and a good texture to the mystery but the audience who saw the old documentary might feel it is less suspenseful.

The Staircase Plot
A crime novelist named Michael Peterson is being accused of striking his wife Kathleen to death after she is found deceased at the bottom of a staircase in their home. All the family members are shocked to see the horrible death of Kathleen. The suspicious death of Kathleen leads police to open an investigation and search for the answers. In process of investigation, the family is directed into a deafening legal battle. On the other hand, a documentary wants to know about the incident and the truth behind the death of Kathleen, so they lead their separate investigation. The judicial battle continued for a long period of 16 years.
The Staircase Storyline
The story sets up in 2001, Michael finds his wife Kathleen bleeding at the bottom of the staircase. He immediately calls 911 but she is declared dead. However, after examining her body, law enforcement believed that Michael may have been involved in her death, leading him to charge with the murder. Michael gathers his family together and hires defense attorney Rudolf to represent behalf of him in court.
Now, the story shifts to the Court. He is indicted for the murder of Kathleen by the grand jury. Meanwhile, prosecutors Freda and Hardin show autopsy reports and a few pictures of gay porn found at Michael’s office which leads Kathleen to fight with him and becomes a motive for Michael to kill her. A Documentary team led by Jean-Xavier watches the news of this case and wants their next documentary to be about the case.
Michael’s bisexuality has come out which needs to be explained by Bill. However family takes it well but Caitlin doubts Michael now. Michael comes out on bail. On the other hand, Rudolf comes up with a plan with his team of forensic experts and crime scene analysts to theorize how Kathleen fell and her injuries are not due to Michael.
In 2002, Jean-Xavier and his documentary team arrives in Durham to start their filming on the case. The DA office digs deeper into Michael’s personal life and finds Dennis Rowe, who claims that he slept with Michael several times. Michael tells that Kathleen knows all of his affairs. The DA establishes the murder weapon as a gift given by Candace to each of her siblings, although they could not find it in Michael’s house. Michael’s trial finally begins in 2003.
In past, Michael found another woman at the bottom of the staircase- Elizabeth, the mother of Margaret and Martha. Too many theories were put forth by different people such as neighbor Larry, and sister Candace. The jury finds Michael guilty and sentences him to life in prison without the least possibility of parole. The documentary made on the case becomes a huge hit in the series. The unethical practice of recreating a crime scene brings up another opportunity for an appeal in Michael’s case.
In 2011, a retrial hearing is granted after an analyst named Duane Deaver gave damning evidence against Michael at the first trial. The retrial is granted and Michael is released from prison and sentenced to house arrest with a bracelet around his ankle. In 2017, 73-year-old Michael struggles with compromising his beliefs and principles in exchange for his freedom. Later, Jean-Xavier shows a video of Michael to Sophie where he admits that his wife Kathleen doesn’t know about his bisexuality and that Kathleen’s death was an accident.
