That was particularly evident in the season finale on Wednesday when he was truly thrilled for Keisa, the love of his life, and her new partner Broderick.

Further, Dean made friends with Broderick and didn’t mind playing the role of the third wheel. It was time for everyone’s favorite end-of-the-school-year custom: signing yearbooks. Summer was just around the corner. Delightfully, Dean signed a lengthy note in Keisa’s handwriting with the words “Love, Dean,” unaware that he had unintentionally expressed his affection for her. Dean started signing everyone’s yearbooks with it, even Broderick’s, so she wouldn’t get the wrong idea. When Broderick and Keisa started talking, Dean thought he had dodged a crisis.

Lillian, who had to travel to Birmingham for a few weeks due to her promotion, was giddy with anticipation in the meantime. When Bill’s manager called to ask him to contribute to writing Marvin Gaye’s upcoming single, more good news entered the room. Unfortunately, he had to spend the entire summer in New York to develop some crucial connections. Although Bill is a progressive spouse, he is still a product of his time, which is why he opted right away to take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime chance while Lillian stayed at home to take care of the children.

Right on schedule, Lillian showed her anger at Bill for making decisions for her by trading in her old automobile and buying a powder blue Mustang with their joint money, without consulting him first. Good work, Lillian. Things continued to be strange between Dean, Keisa, and Broderick at school. The teacher, however, requested Dean to get a table from the utility closet in anticipation of the approaching storm before the trio could discuss it. Keisa offered to assist, and before long the two were trapped in the closet because of a tornado warning.

During their first summer apart, Keisa disclosed while hiding under a table, that she was going to Oklahoma for a few months. While the storm outside raged, hormones surged within as Dean subtly expressed his emotions. And finally, after years of secret longing, he and Keisa shared a kiss. Broderick signed in Dean’s yearbook with “love,” but Dean was too weak to inform him. Bring on the procession of guilt. After some consideration, Bill found a solution to their summertime conundrum that suited everyone. He would bring Dean to New York for the summer while Lillian traveled to Birmingham as scheduled.

Keisa handed Dean his yearbook back and signed it, “Love, Keisa,” as he said farewell. Dean and his father left for New York as Lillian and Kim waved them goodbye in the finale. Winnie, however, relocated to Paris to pursue a history degree, while Kevin stayed in the US, as the program came to a close. Over eight years, they communicated frequently through letters. When Winnie came home, Kevin met her at the airport with his wife and 8-month-old son. The ending was definitely one that makes a fan eager for the next season.
