The stylish, New York City-based series will follow Michael, a character played by Neil Patrick Harris, as he ends a protracted marriage. When his husband eventually exits the house, Michael must start again by discovering who he is, getting back into the dating scene, and overcoming the betrayal and emotional withdrawal that are common to all people going through a split or divorce.

The short film, which is set to a jazzy song, has Michael flinging a bunch of flowers into a garbage can as images of himself and his marriage loop in his head. But Michael brightens when he notices a handsome man across the street. Then images of his single life in New York, complete with a night out at the club and a hookup with a new person, flash across the screen.

It appears to be a long, difficult road back to the new normal for the character, who is depicted in the trailer smashing a fresh bouquet of romantic red roses next to a garbage can and set to the jazzy, sassy music that proclaims on behalf of all New York City romantic dramas, “this is a New York City romantic drama.”

A 40-something single gay man living his life in New York City is the subject of a new series that producers Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman are both eager to make. Despite their emphasis that the show is not about being homosexual, the Netflix producers are eager to create such a representative series. It is energizing to witness a project that focuses mainly on a character, about a human being simply trying to live their life, without evoking any stereotypes. Uncoupled appears to be succeeding in the goal that content should actively promote underrepresented media rather than proclaiming that it is trying to do so.
