Tom Courtenay won the 2016 BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actor for the first series, while Mark Bonnar won the 2017 BAFTA Scotland for Best Actor in Television for the second season. The first season began filming in March 2015. Following the inaugural series’ surprising popularity, ITV commissioned a second season.
Unforgotten Season 5 Cast
Sinéad portrays DCI Jessica James in Unforgotten Series 5, where she is part of an investigation team that is still hurting from the loss of their former well-respected colleague Cassie Stuart.
“I have long been a fan of Chris Lang’s work, therefore I am overjoyed to be joining the Unforgotten team,” Sinéad Keenan says. I’m excited to work with the incredible cast, led by the great and wonderfully kind Sanjeev Bhaskar. And I’m hoping that if I play my cards well, I’ll be able to peek into Sunny’s backpack!” Sinéad has been in several high-profile dramas, including ITV’s Little Boy Blue, BBC’s Being Human, Three Families, and Showtrial on BBC1, as well as historical dramas The Tudors and Derry Girls.
Sanjeev Bhaskar will return as DI Sunny Khan, although Nicola Walker will not reprise her role as Cassie Stuart after her beloved character perished in the series 4 conclusion. We already know that Bhaskar’s Sunny will get a new companion in crime, but we don’t know who it will be.
Each season has a fresh murder case and suspects, as well as a new cast. The program has become noted for its remarkable guest actors; in the first season, famed actor Tom Courtenay received a BAFTA for his appearance as Eric Slater. Season 4’s cast included Susan Lynch, Sheila Hancock, and film and TV actor Phaldut Sharma, who appeared in series 3 as Dr. Tim Finch. So, maybe, we’ll see some more big names in season 5.

Unforgotten Season 5 Plot
Bhaskar confirmed to Radio Times that there wasn’t much of a time difference between seasons 4 and 5. “The tale will pick up not long after the last story,” he promised. “So there’s a link to that narrative.”
ITV has given a narrative concept for the season, in which DCI James and DI Khan are pushed right into a murder case that might be nearly 100 years old. “The new season begins with the clock ticking down to DCI James’s first day in her new position, with an unexpected and sad introduction to her family life,” according to the ITV synopsis.
Unforgotten Season 5 Storyline
The fifth season of Unforgotten begins immediately before DCI Jessica James’ first day on the job, when an unexpected and sad tragedy occurs in her personal life. Despite this, Jessica is keen to make a positive first impression on her new coworkers; but, can Jessica be in the appropriate state of mind to fit in with and motivate the team?
The ghost of much-loved former colleague Cassie Stuart weighs large over the team, and Jess is well aware that she will be filling heavy shoes. If she were to live up to her much-admired and respected predecessor, she will require determination, professionalism, and a tremendous attitude.
Writer Chris Lang has indicated that we will see more of Sunny’s personal life as he and the crew deal with Cassie’s death.
We may discover more about Sunny’s girlfriend Sal, whom the detective proposed to in the season 4 finale. “Yeah, we’ll learn a lot more about her,” Lang told PBS Masterpiece. “There is a plot there, and I wanted to do this anyhow, but it’s fascinating how much the audience responds to your two characters’ issues.”
“I believe people enjoy such stuff, and I love writing it, so I’ve tried to make more place in this season for our two characters’ personal lives, especially his new partner’s. There’s a significant personal tale here.” Lang also says that we may see more of Cassie’s family and how her father’s ongoing dementia battle plays out. “Part of me doesn’t want to let them go, and I believe there are organic ways for them to remain present. But the problem with this show is that there’s always a lot more material I want to put in than there is space for…”
We anticipate that the format will be similar to the last season, but this time DI Sunny will be assisted by a new colleague in solving murder cold cases.
Unforgotten Season 5 Release Date
Unforgotten will officially return for a fifth season, with Sanjeev Bhaskar returning to solve another cold case with a fresh new partner in crime.
Season 4’s devastating climax saw Nicola Walker’s DCI Cassie Stuart die from injuries incurred in a car accident in the previous episode, while Bhaskar’s DI Sunny Khan raced against the time to solve Matthew Walsh’s historic murder.
Chris Lang, the show’s creator, had informed fans that further information on the police procedural will be disclosed on 30 March 2022, and recently ITV has announced that the program will return and Bhaskar will have a new co-star – who has yet to be confirmed.
“ITV would like to congratulate Nicola Walker for playing the wonderful Cassie Stuart in four seasons of Unforgotten,” the broadcaster stated in a statement. “Nicola and writer Chris Lang decided last night that Cassie’s tale would finish, but that Unforgotten will continue in series 5, with a fresh case and a new ‘Partner in Crime’ for DI Sunny Khan.”
Season 5 of Unforgotten is a six-part series. ITV has not announced a release date, but we anticipate that the crime drama will begin in late 2022 or early 2023.
