Now that Hakumen no Mono is nearing the end, it is more dangerous than ever. Hakumen bursts loose and transforms into a ballistic bundle of unrestrained rage after acknowledging that Ushio and Tora’s verbal beating is accurate and that it is jealous of the world. There isn’t much of a tragic tale for The Hakumen no Mono. It is now and has always been the epitome of absolute wickedness. Nevertheless, we are forced to feel terrible for it at the very end. If this had been proposed sooner, I would not have supported it. The Hakumen is the ideal antagonist for this program since it lacks an emotional weakness that Ushio may exploit with his generosity.

Because it lacks goodness, the Hakumen’s weakness manifests as hostile feelings like enmity and defensiveness. Through his amazing trash-talking, Tora suggests that the Hakumen is envious of Ushio and his numerous pals. The Hakumen rages, even more, terrible in its frailty than when it was fully in charge.

The Hakumen claims that while it dislikes being wicked, it can only do it by channeling even more negative energy. The Hakumen that have dogged this entire series has not found redemption in this, and if they had, I would be miffed. The Hakumen begs in its dying breath, “Say my name,” but it’s appropriate that its babbling is left untranslated. Whatever the Hakumen desired, it never made an effort to atone for its mistakes.

This is Tora’s tale, not mine. Tora may have always come across as a nasty guy, but his actions speak for themselves. Contrary to the Hakumen, who begs for sympathy despite its horror, Tora manages to win over viewers without even trying. When he decides to hide the Beast Spear inside his body to prevent the Hakumen from discovering their whereabouts, the story completes a circle and he confesses that this is the reason he remained stuck in the cellar for 500 years: to keep the Beast Spear secure for its last user, Ushio.

Ushio had previously believed that Tora had killed Nagare out of spite, but during their final confrontation with the Hakumen, Tora reveals the true circumstances surrounding Nagare’s passing. (And why would he think otherwise if Tora had told him that?) In the end, Tora’s passing is compared to that of the Hakumen. The Hakumen passes away without having its wishes realized, and nobody mourns it. Tora, meantime, passes away contented, equating the joy of being Ushio’s friend to bodily completeness and realizing that many people will miss him when he is gone.

The finality of this episode, which depicts everyone’s bittersweet endings, gives it strength. This ending is told in the tiny details that touch our hearts, and the slight indication of hope at the end, from the yokai, who voluntarily turn to stone to rescue Japan, to MAYUKO, who can’t hear the phrase “hamburger,” to Ushio, who refuses to let any of Mom’s miso soup go to waste.

This fairytale climax is appropriate for a program with a focus on the paranormal and a good vs. evil story that still has relevance 20 years later. This was a flawless shounen adaptation that is destined to be popular for many years to come.

What first distinguished it as a monster of the week activity was mostly the yokai. A student’s daily existence was disturbed by strange, amazing animals. But as the show went on, it started to find its footing… and then it suddenly started to gallop. Ushio and Tora never simply followed cliches; instead, they used them, improved them, and shaped them until they were what they needed to be before letting the characters handle the rest. Examples include an amnesia story that was neither hackneyed nor annoying and having an ally fall to evil in a believable and surprisingly selfish way.

At the end of the day, even if its pieces have appeared in stories throughout history, no one has put them together quite like this series, and for that, I will always remember Ushio and Tora.
