The movie follows the story of the Corleone Family, a mafia family in New York, led by Vito Corleone also known as The Godfather. Vito is attacked by a rival family upon which, his son Michael, who had previously distanced himself from the Mafia Family, decides to exact revenge. The story shows the transformation of Michael from an outsider to the family to a mafia boss.

The majority of the filming took place in New York City upon the director’s desire to shoot in actual locations instead of movie sets. They also utilised Filmways in East Harlem for many scenes. Michael’s son’s christening was filmed in the stunning St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral in Manhattan giving the backdrop for an iconic scene.

The Corleone mansion scenes were filmed in Emerson Hill, Staten Island. The crew added a stone wall with a metal gate to give the mansions an even more threatening feel in the movie.

Radio City Music Hall was another filming location in Manhattan. It played a rather small role in the film but the building still looks the same and is a go-to spot for The Godfather‘s ardent fans. Other classic filming locations include the St. Regis Hotel in Manhattan where many exterior shots were filmed, Mietz Building and Fruit Stand in Manhattan where the Corleone meetings were filmed, Hotel St. George in Brooklyn and Calvary Cemetery in Queens.

The story is set in Corleone, Palermo in Italy but the filming took place in other parts of Italy since Corleone looked too modern for Coppola’s plans for the film. Bar Vitelli is a beautiful cafe in the Piazza Fossia where Michael meets his future father-in-law.

Michael’s wedding was filmed in the Church of San Nicolo located in Savoca. It’s a brilliant location that gives a panoramic view of Sicily. Church of Santissima Annunziata located in Forza d’Agro also gives the backdrop for many exterior scenes throughout the trilogy because of its aesthetic architecture.
